The essay discusses the theological place and role of “sola opera(deed alone)” Christian active participation in social work became prominent in the beginning stage of the Reformation. Often one may misunderstand that the reformation watchword is 'sola fide' alone. Though he strongly argued that man plays any role in the process of salvation, however, Luther always claimed that man should live and act according to the evangelical principle of 'sola opera (deeds alone).' This idea is much developed in his writings about two kingdoms theory and vocation. The reformer's original concern was the replacement of 'opera' in Christian living, which is toward for others rather than God. Therefore, correct reformation catch phrase must be 'sola fide' toward God and 'sola opera' toward neighbors.
In the nineteenth century called the Great Century, the missionaries carried out various social works and activities that promote the condition of daily poor life of natives. Such was the case of Korea. In the beginning stage of Korean mission, the practice of Christian social responsibility was prominent and, consequently, helped the growth of Korean churches. The essay also suggests religious education based on love for the nation. This was one of main characteristics in early Korean church. The motto, sola opera, must be today's primary principle of Christian education. Such shift of teaching in the church will help Christians to encounter and overcome present crises in Korean society and churches.
