The meanings of prefix ‘saeng(생)-’ and ‘nal(날)-’ can subdivided the basic meaning and the applied meanings. These basic meaning and the applied meanings constitute polysemy with motivation.
The prefix ‘saeng-’ and ‘nal-’ hold the basic meaning and the applied meanings in common. The basic meaning of prefix ‘saeng-’ and ‘nal-’ is ‘raw’ and the applied meanings are ‘unprepared, unreasonable and so on.’
The productivity of ‘saeng-’ is higher than ‘nal-’, so ‘saeng-’ has many derivative words which have applied meanings. If we coin new words, we may choose ‘saeng-’ which has high productivity. But ‘nal-’ has more examples than ‘saeng-’ in the meaning of ‘barefaced’.
