Concentrations and spatial distributions of marine environmental parameters such as temperature, salinity, nutrients, phytoplankton chl-α, SS, dissolved heavy metals(Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) and particulate heavy metals(Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Mn, Pb, Zn, Al, Fe) were measured in the surface water of Marian Cove, King George Island, Antarctica, during austral summer 2000, in order to detect baseline levels for marine environmental monitoring on the nearshore waters of adjacent to the King Sejong Station. Temperature and salinity ranged from -0.4 to 0.7℃ and ranged from 33.7 to 34.3psu, respectively, and dependent upon input of melt waters from ice cliffs and icebergs. Chl-α concentrations ranged from 0.13 to 1.06 ㎍ ℓ?¹, and showed low values in the waters around ice cliffs. SS ranged from 17.84 to 30.20 ㎎ ℓ?¹, and the highest values were found in the waters around ice cliffs, indicating that distributions of SS seem to be significantly effected by terrigenous sediment of meltwaters from ice cliffs. Concentrations of nitrate, phosphate and silicate were high in the waters around ice-cliffs, and ranged from 19.51 to 28.63 μM and ranged from 2.22 to 2.72 μM and ranged from 57.18 to 88.21 μM, respectively. Concentrations of dissolved heavy metals such as Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn ranged from 0.060 to 0.075 ㎍ ℓ?¹ ranged from 0.007 to 0.028 ㎍ ℓ?¹, ranged from 0.180 to 0.393 ㎍ ℓ?¹, ranged from 0.337 to 0.427 ㎍ ℓ?¹, ranged from 0.006 to 0.052 ㎍ ℓ?¹, and ranged from 0.240 to 0.598 ㎍ ℓ?¹, respectively and showed very high values in the waters around ice cliffs, suggesting that distributions of these metals were effected by melt-waters from ice cliffs mainly. On the other hand, contents of particulate heavy metals such as Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn ranged from 0.23 to 0.791 ㎍g?¹, ranged from 5.90 to 44,74 ㎍g?¹, ranged from 29.70 to 315.49 ㎍g?¹, ranged from 45.25 to 238.97 ㎍g?¹, ranged from 317.33 to 2295.26 ㎍g?¹, ranged from 7.40 to 140.94 ㎍g?¹, and ranged from 13.01 to 56.90 ㎍g?¹, respectively. Among these particulate metals, Cd, Co, Cu, Mn, Pn, and Zn showed the highest contents in the waters around ice cliffs, but contents of Cr and Ni were high in the waters around Weaver Peninsula. Contents of Al and Fe ranged from 3.2 to 31.6% and from 0.9~3.1%, respectively and the highest values were found in the waters of around ice cliffs. Therefore, it is speculate that inputs of meltwaters from ice cliffs were the important contributors for distributions of environmental parameters in Marian Cove. The affinity to dissolved phase were dominated in Cd and Ni, however, Co, Pb, Zn showed the affinity to particle phase.
