Trials to investigate the effects on bending on xylem sap transport and tree growth were carried out using 4-year-old ‘Fuji’/M.9 trees with moderate tree vigor from April to October 20. All branches from the same tree were bended with horizontal degree (90 degrees of bending against to their leaders) or below horizontal degree (120 degrees of bending against to those). The trees bended by 90 degree trees produced wider leaf area and longer total shoot length than those bended by 120 degree. Compared to 120 degree of bending, 90 degree of bending had higher total amount and the rate of sap flow. The lateral branches of ‘Fuji’/M.9 having different basal diameter were bended with 90 and 120 degree to examine their effects on shoot growth and xylem sap flow. Number of leaves, leaf area and shoot growth were mainly affected by branch diameter. Especially, the branch with 21 to 25 mm diameter showed higher mean leaf area and shoot growth. The amount of xylem sap flow in early growing stage (April to July) was closely related with branch thickness. Xylem sap flow was mainly affected by branch diameter and the sap flow was also controlled by the degree of bending.
