This research was conducted to raise high quality tomato seedlings by examining the influence of mechanical stimulation under water stress on drought resistance of the seedlings. The mechanical stimulation increased ethylene forming enzyme activity, ethylene evolution, and respiration. The mechanical stimulation also increased number of stomata and water loss rate per unit area of a detached leaf. However, specific leaf area was decreased with the mechanical stimulation. The mechanical stimulation decreased overall amount of transpiration of the tomato seedlings under water stress, but increased abscisic acid content by approximately nine times as compared to the control.
