In carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus cv. Desio), salt stress was imposed with irrigation water containing 0, 25, 50, 100, and 200 mM NaCl in Aichi's carnation nutrient solution. Plant height decreased significantly with increasing NaCl concentration, while leaf and root dry weight did not. Stem dry weight was significantly reduced by 81.3%. Flowering was delayed by 15.7 and 31.0 days at 25 and 50 mM NaCl treatments, respectively. Flowering was suppressed at 100 and 200 mM treatments due to restricted flower bud development rather than failure of flower bud formation. Flower diameter and weight and stem diameter were significantly reduced with increasing salinity. Na content in leaves increased significantly while K content decreased, reducing the K/Na ratio with increasing NaCl concentration. Na content was in the order of lower leaf > middle leaf > upper leaf > stem > root for carnation cv. Desio. These results indicate that salt stress of over 25 mM NaCl significantly decreased plant growth, reduced flower quality, and caused Na accumulation especially in the lower leaves in carnation.
