Various discourses on domestic crime developed as a genre in the Victorian period with growing intertextuality between the real life cases and the fictional account. Victorian fascination with the discourses on domestic crime brought about the reformulation of contemporary ideologies on marriage, family and femininity. The purpose of this paper is to examine Victorian domestic crime and femininity focusing on Mary Elizabeth Braddon's Aurora Floyd.
In Aurora Floyd, Victorian home is represented not as a place of refuge, but as a place of threat, which contains violence, danger, and death. Braddon examines the domestic crime and femininity of mid-Victorian period by violent resignification of femininity and space of home. The ideology of ideal domestic woman and domestic space is disrupted through Aurora's association with crime and violence. The murder and violence in domestic sphere is related to the disruption of middle class notion of femininity. Braddon explores the cultural conflict which is originated from the contradictory discourses on women and leads the reader to reevaluate the source of domestic crime in the Victorian home.
Braddon focuses on the criminal body by using visual tactics and melodramatic style. Her representation of Aurora's criminal body offers a resignification of middle class view of femininity. Although she uses the pattern of chastising the dangerous woman as a means of restoring domestic purity, it cannot erase the tensions and subversive meanings the text produces over the Victorian home and femininity. The domestic crime in Aurora Floyd shows cultural anxieties concerning gender and domestic ideology in the Victorian period.
