The study is to arrange and analyze the performance of the research so far since 1985 when the metal craft study began to proceed. The study is also the works to investigate where the craft has located in the art and which role it has played. In addition, the study has a meaning in a sense that it is a basic works to designate the direction of the study all the fields about crafts like metal craft in the future, further on art history.
The study of metal crafts was started from 1960’s focusing on the Buddhist metal crafts. In 1970’s, the study faced with its evolution era by the archaeological excavation, the interests in the traditional cultures over the whole society, increased researchers with the growth of art history. Since 1980’s, metal crafts began to play a role as a part in the research of Korean crafts history which had focused on ceramics, and many research performances have been accumulated.
Especially the study of metal crafts was attempted in various manners about uses, manufacturing techniques, manufacturing ages, symbolic representation of ornament styles, craftsman, esthetic awareness by ages, as the history of crafts playa role as a part of art history since 1990’s.
The performance of the research are classified as follows.
(1) The analysis about the metal crafts excavated from tomb initiated in a more serious manner. (2) The study about manufacturing techniques was vitalized. Especially the biggest output is to rename the Inlay 象嵌 technique which inlays the different material on the surface of the craft as Ipsa 入絲. (3) The importance of general metal crafts in the age of the Unified Silla was raised. There were interests about the copper mirror by Pyeongtal 平脫 tecnrnque and the metal vessel by Inlay 入絲 technique (4) The discussion about international exchanges of metal crafts was vitalized. (5) Continuous studies about Buddhist metal crafts was transit into the stage where the difference of esthetic awareness by ages was discussed through the details of phenomena over the stages of the data collection and the introduction, and the stages of identification and analysis about styles. (6) The discussion about craftsmen. The concept of crafts and craftsmen by ages, and the review of their social positions were experimentally discussed. (7) The ornament designs of metal crafts was studied focused on gilt-bronze copper ornamented shoes 飾履 excavated from Shingni-Chong 飾履塚 (8) The scope of the crafts studies was expanded to the study on the crafts excavated from the tombs in Nangnang 樂浪 and Chinese crafts. In addition, about the Baekje incense bunner 百濟金銅大香爐 and the Bell of King Songdok 聖德大王新鍾 which represent an age, the research environment was provided where the analysis about political history, archaeology, history of thought, esthetics as well as art historical approach was possible.
More through analyses on materials, techniques, structure and function, and esthetic characteristics were demanded on the metal crafts studies in the future. In addition to this macro directions, several accompanied suggestions may be raised.
(1) correct selection of terminologies (2) the accommodation of research methodologies beyond the classification by materials (3) the attempt of designating the ages of metal vessels in the Goryeo Period (4) positive interests in metal crafts of the Chosun Period.
The research about metal crafts should provide the basic materials which are demanded from the research of crafts by other materials in the contemporary age. Further, the study should explain the esthetic characteristics in the age when the existing moulding art crafts are rare. If the investigation whether the esthetic awareness expressed on the crafts was appeared on the art of other genres was possible, art and crafts may form the equivalent relationship. Vital study on metal crafts may successfully perform this task.
