‘Cyworld’ has been constituting a crucial cultural domain for numerous Koreans’ everyday social life in recent years. The explosion of interest in cyworld raises such important sociological questions as ‘why are such a number of people are attracted to it?’ ‘how do they make self-presentation on it?’ ‘what are characteristic features of interaction between users?’ and ‘how do they negotiate the boundary of the private and the public?’. Some researchers, mainly through interviews conducted with newspapers, popular magazines, and television, explain the ’cyworld phenomenon’ in terms of ‘exhibitionism’ and ‘voyeurism’. Notwithstanding all the hermeneutic merits, this perspective tends to treat social behaviors of cyworld basically as a somewhat psychologically pathological one and, thus, narrowly defines the socio-cultural implications of users’ self-presentation and social interaction in cyberspace. In stead of this sensational approach, this paper considers cyworld as social space for users’ ‘informal public life’ and explore its nature in conjunction with users’ behavioral strategies to negotiate the boundary between the private and the public. By conducting a content analysis of 23 mini hompies collected from the main page of cyworld, this study shows that users regard the mini hompy as an distinctive ‘third place’ separated from both home and work. It also shows that the main audience of mini hompy is ‘referent others’ composed of off-line friends and newly acquainted online friends. In addition, this research confirms that cyworld shows general features of traditional informal public life including openness, cooperation, festive mood, and so on. Although cyworld is public space open to anybody who wants to visit on the Internet, users emphasize on its private nature in a similar manner that a party between intimate friends happening in a park is usually considered private.
