To examine the relationship between socioeconomic status and health is an important topic of social inequality. SES-based disparity in health might vary across age - for example, older adults in Korea might have greater disparity in health than younger adults. Using 1998 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey data, this study examines how the relationships between educational or economic level and morbidity or self-rated health change across ages of 25 years and more. Overall results support the pattern that SES-based health disparities diverge with age. One mechanism of the diverging health disparity is that SES-based disparities in risk factors such as tiredness, stress, or depression diverge with age. Another mechanism is that the impacts of risk factors such as stress or depression on health become stronger in older ages. Because older adults in Korea have greater health inequality, social interventions need to take attention to lower-SES elders and the risk factors which are found in this study as effective factors to reduce the health disparity among the elderly.
