Traffic-related air pollution studies have been extensively conducted to understand urban air pollution and health effects of air pollutants. However, a little concern on this topic was paid in Korea. In this paper, a few recent studies conducted at the roadside and on roads in Seoul were reviewed. The concentrations of ultrafine particles and BC were highly fluctuated for a short duration, responding to traffic situation. Diurnal variations of ultrafine particles and BC concentrations seemed to be affected by the traffic volume. Minimum concentration was observed at 3 to 5 a.m. and a relatively stable particle size distribution was monitored during that period. The concentrations of ultrafine particles and BC were decreased as the distance from a road increased due to the dilution process during the transport. On-road air pollution seemed to be more severe than roadside air pollution.
In Korea, a little information about traffic-related air pollution is available. To characterize urban air pollution, extensive studies on the vehicle-related air pollutants such as ultrafine particles, BC, NOx, PAHs should be carried out in the near future.
