Seoul has continued virtually nonstop in its urban development efforts since the 1960s. Consequently, the city has become one of the roost seriously affected by air pollution among OECD member countries, Although the Korean Government claims to be actively working to improve the air quality, as of yet there has not been any significant, positive effects because policies typically focus on controlling the total amount of air pollution already created and fail to address the original causal factors and important changes in the environment. This study is a preliminary research analyzing the correlation between air pollution and urban development density factors (ex. population, employment, land use, transportation, etc.) to determine their contributions to air pollution. The results from simulated analysis are as follows: Gradually the level of NO₂, and PM10 in the CBD, Yeongdeungpo, and Yeongdong has become higher than in other areas and is covering a broader area than others. It was found that in these areas, which serve as centers of employment, there were higher levels of energy consumption by commercial-business activities and traffic volumes than other areas, and that these higher levels have a direct effect on air quality. Moreover, each district within these areas was found to be impacted by different development density factors. This study determined that wiser land use and transportation planning need to be established in consideration to changes in regional air pollution to manage air quality effectively and subsequently promote a higher quality of life.
