The present study is concerned with how metonymy producing vehicle-target relationship takes pace. The notion of 'contiguity' or 'ICM' has always been at the core of most definitions of metonymy, and I have examined that these approaches could not properly account for characteristic phenomenon of metonymy. As an alternative model, I have suggested that vehicle-target relationship occurs on the foundation of experiential-accompaniment relationship, which arise from recognition of salience or recurrent pattern of two accompanied experiences. This experiential-accompaniment model hypothesizes that only experiential accompaniment can make potential vehicle-target of metonymy, and (if motivated by relevance factor) any possible accompanied experiences can potentially give rise to metonymy. In chapter 2, It is examined that our EAR (Experiential Accompaniment Relationship) model provides us with key understanding about why metonymy producing relationships are not reversible in most cases and why only constrained parts of ICM get involved in producing metonymy according to experiential boundaries. In chapter 4, It is examined that every types of vehicle-target relationships found in actual cases of metonymy are based on types of experiential accompaniment relationships. The types of experiential accompaniment are determined by two factors, whether accompanied experiences take place at the same time or not and whether they occur universally or in constrained situation. In constrained situation based vehicle-target relationships, the asymmetry of accompaniment relationship bring about the irreversible vehicle-target relationship. Metonymy is redefined as a reference-point phenomenon within experiential accompaniment relationship, necessarily involving stand-for relationship.
