CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) is one of light-weight material for alternating steel, reducing exhaust gas emission and increasing safety concerns. The material, however, is also susceptible to the damages from collision of the foreign object. To complement a brittle fracturing, Aluminum, one of light-weight materials was used.
The front side members of an automobile, which support engine mount and suspension absorb the most of the energy during the front-end collision. Generally, when an automobile crashes front-end, bending take place on the front side members. Therefore, it is important to consider energy absorption by the bending for design of effective strength members.
In this study, The Al/CFRP hybrid side members with single-hat-section shape were manufactured. As the CFRP is an anisotropic material whose mechanical properties change with its stacking sequence, special attention was given to the effects of the fiber orientation angle. We produced the bending test equipment that load point equipment and support equipment. Bending tests were performed for the members using UTM. Special attention was given to the effects of the fiber orientation angle on the bending characteristics of the hybrid member. For comparing bending characteristics of Aluminum & CFRP hybrid square members with those of pure aluminum and CFRP member, tests were performed for hybrid member respectively.
