The purpose of this paper is to account for the case markings on the causative pivot, i.e. the causee, in Korean analytic (periphrastic) causative constructions. In these constructions, the causative pivot is marked with three different cases: nominative, accusative or dative. There are many languages in which the causative pivot is marked in two different ways: for example, accusative and dative (Japanese, Modern Hebrew), and accusative and instrumental (Hungarian), but few languages seem to have been attested to show nominative, accusative and dative case markings as in Korean. Many attempts have been made under different linguistic frameworks to account for the syntax and semantics of Korean causative constructions, lexical and analytic, but to my knowledge there have been few satisfactory analyses about the case marking mechanism in Korean. In this paper I attempt to propose the semantic mechanism, in terms of 'volitional control' and 'agentivity', that accounts for the differences in case marking of the causative pivot . What I claim is that the nominative case signals the strong volitional control and agentivity of the causative pivot as a secondary agent, that the dative case signals the mild control and weak agentivity of the causative pivot, and that the accusative case signals little or no volitional control and agentivity of the causative pivot.
