This paper explains the semantico-pragmatic properties of the Korean benefactive construction represented by "-e cwuta" within the theoretical framework of grammaticalization. We claim that the cwuta benefactive construction is a result of grammaticalization, by which the verb cuwta has been grammaticalized from a full verb to a verbal auxiliary, when the object of the verb represents an event rather than an entity. We claim that the core semantic feature of the verb cwuta is TRANSFER and that POSSESSION and FAVOR are pragmatic implicature. And other derivative meanings such as (COMING INTO) EXISTENCE contribute to the well-formedness of the construction. Finally we contend that the pragmatic meaning of FAVOR has been semanticized when cwuta appears in requests or orders.
