The liner trends of tropospheric (200-1000 hPa) and lower stratospheric (20-200 hPa) temperature are studied using the 40-year NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data set. Layer mean temperature between two pressure levels is calculated from geopotential height using the hydrostatic equation. The temperature in the global troposphere showed an increasing trend of 0.75K per 40 yrs. The increasing trend was larger in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) than in the Northern Hemisphere (NH). The warming trend was found for all seasons but with a stronger trend in cold seasons than warm seasons. Regional analysis revealed that the temperature trend in the 200-500 hPa layer varies from region to region, exhibiting the largest cooling trend of -0.279K per 40 yrs over the Eurasian continent. Unlike the troposphere, the temperature trend in the lower stratosphere showed a cooling trend for all seasons. The correlation analysis between the mean temperature and Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) was carried out. It was shown that the global mean temperature is positively correlated with the SOI having the maximum correlation coefficient of 0.356 with the time lag of 4 months and 10 days. The tropical mean temperature has the maximum of +0.555 with the time lag of 2 months and 25 days. The SH exhibited a stronger correlation between SOI and mean temperature in the NH, but the time lag for the maximum correlation in the SH is larger than in NH.
