The significant differences in between the two strongest 1982/83 and 1997/98 El Nino events of 20th century and the different characteristics in East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) associated with theses two events have been found. In the case of 1982/83 El Nino event, El Nino signal over the tropical eastern Pacific has maintained until the summer of1983 and the EASM was weakened. On the other hand, in the case of1997/98 El Nino event, the positive sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the equatorial eastern Pacific region changed suddenly to negative SSTA (La Nina) in the summer 1998 and the EASM was intensified. Also the EASM responses due to the remote SST forcings on the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific were strikingly different each other in 1982/83 and 1997/98 El Nino events. In the evolution of SST A from the boreal autumn to the summer offollowing year over the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific, the SSTA magnitudes of 1997/98 El Nino event are much larger than those of1982/83 El Nifio event. The examination of the circulation features suggests that the effects of the El Nino events on the EASM are realized through the different decaying state. The significant differences between effects of each El Nino event associated with the different decaying state on the EASM have been confirmed.
