Quantitative characteristics of size distribution and number concentration of particles ranging in size from 10.0 ㎚ to 20.0 ㎛ were analyzed from measurements of an Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) and a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) at the Korea Global Atmosphere Watch Observatory (KGAWO), located in the western coastal region of Korea, for a severe Asian dust event that occurred in early April, 2006. All data obtained by the two instruments were merged by the relationship between mobility diameter (dm) and aerodynamic diameter (da). The supermicron particles distinctly increased with PM10 mass concentration, but submicron particles showed no critical change during the Asian dust event. However, for the coarse mode particles, a rapid increase of the number concentration at the size range from 1.286-2.458 ㎛, and a gradual shift in the maximum number concentration from large particles to small ones, have not been seen in previous OPC measurements. Furthermore, in the submicron particles, the constant high concentration of dN/dlog(da), over 30,000 ㎝?³ at a size range from 0.1-0.4 ㎛, which is found as a typical maximum in the coastal environment, and the irrelevance between the increase in the accumulation mode particles sized from 0.09 to 1.0 ㎛ and the beginning of the Asian dust event, are shown clearly by this high temporal and channel resolution data. Number, surface area, and volume size distributions estimated at four instances during the severe dust event indicate that the latter two charts more precisely present the sensitive variation in the distribution and contribution of supermicron particles to Asian dust.
