Most of the East Asia region including Korea, Japan, and central part of China experienced unusually cool and wet summer in 2003. Much below normal temperature and frequent rainfall resulted in significant damage on agricultural products. The objective of this study is to analyze the large-scale circulation associated with the cool and wet summer conditions and to identify possible mechanisms responsible for the unusual summer climate in East Asia. The persistent upper-level stationary trough over East Asia was responsible for the frequent rainfall throughout the summer and unusually active Okhotsk High near the surface which brought frequent cold air to Korea and Japan. It is found that the above normal springtime snow cover over the Tibetan Plateau was responsible for the weakening of the Tibetan anticyclone in summer 2003, which in turn induced the persistent development of a stationary upper-level trough and unusually active Okhotsk High over East Asia. A possible connection between the springtime Tibetan snow cover and the subsequent summertime climate in Korea is investigated using singular value decomposition. The results reveal that the dominant modes of summertime temperature and precipitation anomalies have significant lag correlations with the Tibetan snow cover during the preceding season, the temperature anomalies are negatively correlated to the Tibetan snow cover, whereas the precipitation anomalies are positively correlated. The close relationship between the springtime Tibetan snow cover and the summertime circulation also suggests that the Tibetan Plateau thermal effect is an important forcing mechanism for the development of unusual summer climate in East Asia. The distinct PJ-like pattern also indicates that the diabatic heating over the tropical western Pacific is a contributing factor for the modulation of the summer climate over East Asia, while the relative importance of heating effects over the Tibetan Plateau and the tropical western Pacific remains to be examined.
