Relationships between seasonal change of vegetation and climate elements in east Asia are investigated to examine the feasibility of the current approaches for the vegetation phenology. To this goal, the long term (1982∼2000) normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) derived from meteorological satellite and climate elements are used. The NDVI data used in this study are 10-day composite and 8km resolution, extracted from the Pathfinder AVHRR for Land (PAL) data set, which is produced by NOAA and NASA. The time series of NDVI show a strong interannual variation regardless of the geographic locations. The seasonal change of vegetation in east Asia is closely linked with the seasonal march of temperature. However, the relationships between vegetation phenology and temperature are more or less dependent on the geographic locations as well as years. Also, vegetation phenology over the central and north-eastern China is equally linked with the temperature as well as precipitation. The interannual variation of NDVI is significantly dominant during spring and autumn when the onset and offset of vegetation are sensitive to the temperature variations. The different relationships between vegetation phenology and climate elements according to the geographic locations as well as years suggest that current approaches for the vegetation phenology based on the soil temperature or observed vegetation index during the special year should be revisited.
