A two dimensional cloud model with detailed (using hydrometeor size bins) microphysics was used to investigate cloud seeding effects on cloud and precipitation developments. As a first step, cloud and precipitation development in maritime and continental clouds were compared, where maritime and continental are characterized by the total cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations and thus the initial cloud droplet distributions. For the same initial meteorological conditions, cloud developments were clearly different between maritime and continental clouds: a vigorous cloud development and significant precipitation amounts on the ground were shown for maritime clouds and a meager cloud development and no precipitation for continental clouds. This demonstrates that cloud microphysical differences induced by CCN distributions can affect cloud developments so obviously. Next, seeding experiments were done for these two types of clouds. Ice crystal embryos were sprayed at the updraft maximum areas for 10 min at three different starting times. Seeding on maritime clouds produced a minor impact on cloud developments regardless of when the seeding started. On the other hand seeding on continental clouds resulted in enormous enhancement of precipitation, from practically none to highly significant amounts. Although preliminary at this stage, this result indicates that maritime clouds are not a good candidate for cloud seeding, simply because, even without seeding, these clouds can efficiently produce precipitation particles.
