The present study was designed to evaluate whether streptozotocin-induced diabetes increases apoptotic cell death in rat epididymis. Diabetes was induced by a single injection of streptozotocin (STZ, 40 ㎎/㎏, i.p) and epididymis samples were collected at one or three months after STZ treatment. The body weight was lower in both diabetic groups, compared with controls. In addition, the epididymis weight decreased at three months after STZ treatment. Upon histological examination, a few degenerated germ cells were observed in the epididymis at one month after STZ treatment. The number of degenerated germ cells increased at three months after STZ treatment. Furthermore, only a few TUNEL positive cells were observed in the epididymis at one month after STZ treatment, while the number of TUNEL positive cells increased at three months after STZ treatment. This study demonstrated that STZ-induced diabetes increases apoptosis in epididymis tissue and that these changes markedly increase during three months follow-up studies. In conclusion, these findings suggest that increases of apoptotic cell death in the epididymis of diabetics contribute to the induction of male sexual dysfunction.
