The objective of this work was to study the potential of recycled PET bottle particles (PBT) as growing medium component for the culture of transplants. Physical, chemical and biological characteristics of PBT were analyzed for evaluation as a component of growing mixture. ‘Seokwang’ tomato, ‘Marvel Orange’ marigold and ‘Madness White’ petunia were used as test plants. Substrate mixtures were 100% commercial plug medium (Tosilee medium), 100% peatmoss (PM), 100% PBT, 50% PBT+ 50% PM, 33% PBT+ 67% PM, 25% PBT+ 75% PM, 67% PBT+ 33% PM, and 75% PBT+ 25% PM. All seeds were sown in 200 cell plug trays on August 30, 2004. Seedling growth was measured at 28 days after sowing. The percentage of seed germination was high in all treatments and was not different in all test crops. No toxicity symptoms caused by PBT usage was observed in treatment. The best results among the media mixed with PBT was obtained with a mixture of PBT with 25~67% of peatmoss for the ‘Seokwang’ tomato, 25~33% of peatmoss for the ‘Marvel Orange’ marigold, and 0~33% of peatmoss for the ‘Madness White’ petunia plug seedlings. The results suggest the possibility of recycled PBT, a valuable reusable resource, as a component for medium in horticultural transplant production.
