The aim of this study is to address the questions of "can the exchanges of popular culture in East Asia make it possibles to imagine an East Asia bloc as an imagined community and to imagine an 'East Asian identity?' in the reality that national identity takes up a central position. In the theoretical level, we argue that the imagined East Asian community can be grounded on Asian audiences' experiences of consuming hybridized popular culture products exchanged among East Asia countries, which represent various shapes of lives in articulations with the values of traditions and modernity. and postmodernity. In order to find out whether hybrid cultural practices can constitute the basis for the construction of an 'East Asian identity' with the potential to change the established terrains of power relations. we need to investigate the concrete ways in which those cultural practices are articulated with various power relations in the social and historical contexts. The research findings show that dramas co-produced by Korean and Japan broadcasting productions. which are intentionally constructed to include the elements of hybridity into the texts in the way of matching particular sexes of stars with their nationalities, provide an opportunity to correct or disrupt the hierarchial relation between Korea and Japan in the world of imagination. At the same time, however, the structure of hybridity built in the texts creates an effect of sustaining and naturalizing the unequal power relation between sexes. In the context of the consumption of imported popular culture products, the experience of hybrid popular culture products provides them with an opportunity to reflect critically on the problems in their society as well as understanding the foreign country producing the product. In addition. we can also observe that the mass media try to curb the audiences' cultural consumption practices of a foreign cultural product by producing discourses embedded in the nationalism and sexism. For the part of audiences enjoying other Asian cultural products, some make use of the cultural products as symbolic capital in the way of distinguishing themselves from other users. Paying attention to the complicated dynamics found in the exchanges of popular cultural practices in East Asia, this study suggests that an imagined East Asian identity should be a project to confront and overcome various undemocratic and oppressing power relations as the Other, without imagining the identity in terms of defined cultural contents.
