This research examines organizational determinants of international news coverage in explaining similarities of international news selection among the national dailies of Korea. There have been a number of critics that Korean newspapers failed to view the dynamics of world affairs through international news reporting. Few empirical research has sought to figure out how and why the international news coverage of newspapers are so similar. This research assumes that not only news values of the journalists but also media organizational factors affect the process of international news selection, resulting in similar news reporting between the dailies. Accordingly, two research questions were suggested:
RQ 1 : How similar is international news coverage among the Korean national dailies?
RQ 2 : What are the organizational factors determining similarities of international news selection in the Korean national dailies?
A constructed week sampling procedure collected 1, 499 inter-national news stories from 10 nationwide newspapers by composing two weeks in 1997. All news stories selected then were categorized into 899 news items to determine coverage similarities of international news. Similarities of international news selection were operationally defined as the number of shared news stories between the dailies.
The cluster analysis and metric multidimensional scaling (MDS) were employed to answer research question 1 (How similar is international news coverage among the Korean national dailies?). The cluster analysis showed that 10 dailies were divided into two groups: the evening paper cluster and the morning paper cluster. The two-dimensional solution of MDS revealed a positional pattern of 10 dailies very similar to the cluster analysis. Figure 2 represents a map of the dailies' relative position with the result of cluster analysis. Two evening papers, Kookmin and Munhwa, were located at the periph¬ery constructing a small cluster. All other 8 morning papers were clustered together. Dong-a, Chosun and Hankook were densely located at the near center on the dimensional map. Seoul, Segye and Kyunghyang were integrated into the morning paper cluster occupying a relatively central position. However, Joongang and Hankyoreh were relatively peripheral even though both were members of the morning paper cluster.
Previous research of international news determinants from the organization-oriented perspective proposes that the volume of international news coverage increases as the news organization has more resources, more efficient resource allocation policy, and higher ability to process foreign information for international news production. This review led to three research hypotheses to test the influence of organizational factors on similarities of international news coverage between the dailies:
HI: Similarity of international news selection between the dailies increases as the difference of the size of international news division between them decreases.
H2 : Similarity of international news selection between the dailies increases as the deployment pattern of foreign correspondents is more similar to each other.
H3 : Similarity of international news selection between the dailies increases as the difference in proportion of self-produced news between them decreases.
The correlation and multiple regression analyses were used to answer research question 2(What are the organizational factors determining similarities of international news selection in the Korean national dailies?). The results showed that hypothesis 1 and 2 were accepted. Hypothesis 3, however, was partially accepted. To put it differently, the more similar the size of international news division and deployment pattern of foreign correspondents between the dailies the much the number of shared news stories between them. These two organizational determinants explained 45% of variance in the dependent variable, similarities of international news coverage among the newspapers.
In conclusion, this research implies that the nationwide newspapers as a whole report about the world in a similar fashion because the media organizational factors and conditions affecting the international news selection process are not quite different to one another. In a relative perspective, however, international news coverage of each newspaper is influenced by its uniqueness of the organizational constraints and conditions.
