The purpose of this study was to investigate the electromyographic (EMG) activities of vastus medialis oblique (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL) during closed kinetic chain (CKC) exercises. Twelve collegiate male athletes with and without patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) were recruited for this study. The VMO and VL EMG activities was recorded during squat and step-up/down exercise. The EMG signals were analyzed using the root mean square (RMS) values. There were no significant differences in VMO and VL EMG activities between PFPS and control groups, although VMO activity in PFPS group tended to be lower. There were no significant differences in VMO EMG activities between squat and step-up/down exercises in both group, although VMO activity tended to be higher during step-up/down. But VL EMG activity in control group was significantly higher than that of PFPS group during step-up/down exercises. These results suggest that more selective VMO and VL activation could be obtained during step-up/down exercises. Although there was no significant difference of VMO EMG activity, step-up/down exercise produced high VMO and VL activities and could be good tools for clinical rehabilitation or muscle strengthening programs.
