The aim of this article is to show how the equites Romani have become a distinct class in the time of the Gracchi and have been established the third corporate in the Roman society under the rule of Augustan principate. The Roman Equites were originally the horse-soldiers of the Roman army, and did not form a distinct class or ordo in the Roman society till the time of the Gracchi. According to Livy, Servius Tullius divided the Roman nation into centuriae, which were not only units of army but also voting units in the comitia centuriata. He said that there were 18 centuriae of equites and 170 centuriae of pedites, and 2 centuriae fabrum. In the 18 centuriae of equites were concluded senators, their sons, and equestrians. And actually words equites and senator was same meaning. In the late third century B.C. Rome started to rely upon its allies as cavalry men. So the equestrian centuries lost their military function, but still were called as equites.
Gaius Gracchus began to change the term of equites, for a law was enacted by Gaius Sempronius Gracchus or his fellow tribune Acilius Glabrio from whose name the term Lex Sempronia repetundarum or lex Acilia repetundarum (in B.C. 123/122) stemmed. By this law the power of judicial justice shifted from the hands of senators to those of equites in extortion trials. From now on the senatores and equites existed as independent classes with different rights, obligations, and interests.
Under the rule of Augustus, two orders, senatores and equites were for the first time officially defined. So Augustus said that “while I was administering my thirteenth consulship the senate and the equestrian order and the entire Roman people gave me the title of Father of my Country--”( Res Gestae Divi Augusti , 35)
