The purpose of this study was to confirm the significance of Han Yong-un's poems in the poetic history in the 1920s and their implications on the psychological history of Korean modern poetry by analyzing the functions and effects of the ‘-이다’ structure, one of the major literary style characteristics of Han's poems. Analysis of the various utilization types of the structure as well as the structure itself in his poems would lead to an understanding of its meanings and effects.
In his poems, the ‘A는 B이다’ structure was used as a very important style marker. The structure and its variations were employed to define ‘love,’ ‘parting,’ and ‘You(님)’ differently from the old concepts and thus made a deciding contribution to the completion of Your Silence(『님의 침묵』), which is regarded as a new interpretation of love, parting, and relationships between two lovers. In his poems characterized by the dialectic discourse structure, the ‘A는 B이다’ structure and its variations including ‘-(는 것)은 -는 것이다’, ‘-가 아니라 -이다’, ‘-는/가 -이 되다’ were put in effective use and thus contributed to the creation of new meanings.
The relations of confrontation and contradiction built on the ‘A는 B이다’ structure form a meaning structure that leads to the ultimate integration in Han's poems. His poems present new definitions of love and parting, eventually defining the relationships between ‘You(님)’ and ‘me’ anew and inducing active changes of ‘me.’ That is truly genuine self-conquest. Through the discourse structure of Your Silence, the poet accomplishes the practical meaning of self-conquest that overcomes despair, which is the very characteristic of the Buddhist discourse of his poems.
By making use of the diverse variations of the ‘A는 B이다’ structure, his poems implement the Buddhist discourse consisting of self-conquest and transformation of existence. His poems showed the new possibility of getting over despair and attaining self-conquest to the poetic history in the 1920s that was suffering from romantic self-disillusion after the 3ㆍ1 Movement failed in 1919, accordingly fulfilling meaningful significance in the psychological history of Korean modern poetry.
