The purposes of this study are to grasp the trends of reading collection of poems recently and find a desirable direction for teaching poetry in relation to the trend. In order to achieve this purposes, I analysed recent statistical data related to the trends in bestselling poetry books and explored the possibility of teaching ’poetry literacy' to overcome the problems of the trends.
According to the data which were provided by Korea Federation of Bookseller’s Association, the three trends had been in reading collection of poems in 2005, 2006; (1) many readers had a preference for anthologies, (2) the books that edited by famous poets gained popularity, (3) anthologies by Ryu Si-Hwa have sold well overwhelmingly in 2005, 2006. This trends aren’t disconnected with teaching poetry that have been done until a recent date. In classroom, students have few opportunity to see poetry books written by a poet, and almost always, receive interpretations and explanations of poems from teacher passively. The students grow into adults who had little experience to enjoy poems actively, and they have difficulty choosing a poetry book.
"Literacy" has traditionally defined as the ability to read and write, or the ability to use language to read, write, listen, and speak. New Literacy Studies researchers argue that literacy is not autonomous or a set of discrete technical and objective skills, such as reading and writing, that can be applied across context. Instead what counts as literacy is determined by the cultural, political, and historical contexts of the community in which it is used. "Poetry literacy" is too not simply a means of attaining literacy in the sense of improving the ability to reading and writing poetry. The important thing is being able to have a discussion with others about the social and cultural meanings a poem might have.
As new revised national curriculum, contents of "literature" is organized work(text), knowledge, receive and production, context, specially "context" has intimate relations to poetry literacy. This changes will make learner-centered teaching poetry possible.
