The objective of the present study is to examine the thinking of ecological rationality based on holistic perception and environmental ethics and to reilluminate the characteristics of contemporary architecture on the basis of holistic perception by ecologically rational thinking.
While rationality is related to norms by human reason or intelligence, ecological rationality is comprehensive. That is, as a practical norm by efficiency and equity, ecological rationality pursues sustainability, and ecologically rational architecture means reaching practical forms through philosophical approaches and morality based on the recognition of the value of nature.
This study analyzed the types of holistic thinking of contemporary architecture by classifying architecture planning methods and expression characteristics according to schematized patterns based on the basic perception of ecologically rational thinking and dividing the expression techniques of ecological environment into five stages (wholeness, constancy, circularity, efficiency and futurity), which are the concepts of ecologically rational thinking.
According to the results of analysis, ecological expressions and applications of contemporary architecture are being planned and executed in many areas, but when they are analyzed according to the concept of ecologically rational thinking, the characteristics of ecological expression in architecture are being applied and expressed in partial thinking. Accordingly, it is required to recognize contemporary architecture as an organic relation of an holistic concept rather than a partial concept and to make an approach of rational thinking for ecological environment.
