Three root media: coir+perlite (8:2, v/v, CP), peatmoss+perlite (8:2, v/v, PP) and coir+peatmoss+perlite (4:4:2, v/v/v, CPP) were formulated. Each of the three root media had three pre-planting fertilizer levels such as 0.5X, 1.0X and 2.0X. The seedling growth and nutrient contents of hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L. ‘Sweet Green’) were determined at 35 and 70 days after sowing in 70-cell plug trays. The seedling growth at 35 days after sowing increased as pre-planting fertilizer levels were elevated in three root media. Comparing the three root media with an equal amount of pre-planting fertilizers, the PP medium performed the best for seedling growth followed by the CPP and CP media. Elevated pre-planting fertilizer levels in the three root media also increased seedling growth at 70 days after sowing; however, CPP performed the best for seedling growth followed by PP and CP when an equal amount of pre-plant fertilizer was incorporated. The macro-element contents of above ground tissue increased as pre-planting fertilizer levels were elevated in the three root media at 35 days after sowing. The tissue contents of all nutrients except K increased with statistical differences as fertilizer levels in the three root media were elevated. However, elevated pre-planting fertilizer levels showed a decrease in tissue P contents of seedlings grown in CP and CPP media and an increase in PP medium at 70 days after sowing. Those levels also resulted in an increase of tissue Ca and Mg contents and a decrease of K, Fe, and Mn contents in all root media tested.
