The purpose of this paper is to point out the inappropriate prosodic phrasing patterns found in Koreans speaking English and to clarify the causes of these prosodic errors in the English production of Korean speakers. The unnatural phrasing patterns were found in the experiments we conducted, in which we used the two different types of sentences: the one with that-clause as an object and the other with the phrasal verbs. The data showed that Korean speakers consistently spoke with improper prosodic phrasing boundary in their English production, the cause of which could be traced back to L1 transfer and their English learning style. The former reason, the potential factor, may be reinforced by the second one. On the basis of this observation, we provide some guidelines for teaching English prosodic phrasing to Korean students.
