〈SeHanDo〉 is a luxury painted by Choosa(秋史) Kim Jeong Hee(金正喜) for Lee Sang Jeok, one of disciples. When Lee Sang Jeok(李尙迪) went to Ching at his 7th time, he brought this painting with him to Beijing(北京) and showed it to the scholars there, who gave him their JeChan (題贊: written impression) of the painter. Since then, the 14 meter long roll type 〈SeHanDo〉 had been completely painted through several processes of addition and supplementation to which 19 people's seeing of the painting and JeChan from 16 of them contributed. All these processes can be said to be completed through Lee Sang Jeok's efforts. Why did Lee Sang Jeok bring 〈SeHanDo〉 to Beijing far away and receive JeChan on its painter? This issue has not been yet clearly solved stimulating my curiosity. I decided to find out the reasons based on several results that I had gained through this study so far.
First of all, the results gained so far can be summarized as follow:
〈SeHanDo〉 was shown in an organization that had various age groups from 20s to 60s.
The organization members were mostly from YangHo Scholars' Sector (陽湖學派) based on YangHo(陽湖), Jiangsu(江蘇省).
Most of them were those who passed Government official exam for JinSa (進士) and high intellectuals who were intelligent enough to be JinSa.
The JeChan was composed for Kim Jeong Hee, and its theme was to laud Kim Jeong Hee's integrity and faith.
Based on such four results set forth above, I can guess why Lee Sang Jeok received Chinese intellectuals' JeChan on 〈SeHanDo〉 as follows: It is thought that Lee Sang Jeok had a purpose to get reputation from foreign scholars from Ching. That is, he needed Kim Jeong Hee, the author of SeHanDo to be highly evaluated in the place of the highest intellectuals based on Jiangsu that was the academic mecca of that time. He seemed to inwardly expect that such foreign intellectuals' high evaluation would be delivered to the politicians and scholars in Joseon(朝鮮) and it would bring a spark of wish for Kim Jeong Hee to get released from the suffering exile life in the future.
