▶ "Transportation is a civilization." It's an exact phrase to express the process of development of civilization which is performed with information flowing via transportation. And it's a point of view of this article, for the history of human progress.
▶ Transportation barriers are mountains, deserts and water in the primitive age. But water become a natural pathway with a development of waterway transportation. Especially, sea is a natural expressway to combine the world with a development of maritime transportation.
▶ In the world history, generally the white race dominated and colored races were under the control during 500 years since Columbus. The reason why the white race could be the dominator is that they are excellent in ship`s operations.
▶ European/American scholars classify the maritime world history as follows; to the end of 15th century is a Mediterranean age, from after Mediterranean age to middle of 20th century is a Atlantic age and since 1970's is a Pacific age.
But until 15th century, the Mediterranean Sea was a simple distribution channel of oriental civilization imported across the Indian Ocean via the Silk Road, especially the Sea Silk Road. So, in my opinion, an Indian age is much more suitable name instead of 'the Mediterranean age'.
▶ Three marvelous (compass, gunpowder and printing skill) which lead the Renaissance were imported in Europe from China via the Silk Road. The compass helped Europeans to make up their mind to sail the Atlantic Ocean.
▶ Most ancient civilizations waned before and after the Christian era and had never been restored. But only the ancient China Hwang-Ho civilization was continuously developed. I think the reason was the ancient China country, Sue, successfully constructed national waterway transportation network with grand canals in the Yellow River and the Yangtze River etc.
▶ Why did the civilization only move westward?
In 5-6th century when the Sea Silk Road had been started to form, only the Hwang-Ho civilization was in full flourish. So, this civilization couldn't go eastward because of the Pacific Ocean which was too wide to cross it with the sailing technique at that time. It couldn't progress northward because of the coldness and also the southward part was too hot to shuttle down. The only way to propagate was westward.
▶ The speed of civilization propagation was in direct proportion to the speed of transportation. It took 1,500 years that the China Hwang-Ho civilization shuttled down in Europe (Renaissance) across the Indian Ocean. 500 years took that the European civilization also shuttled down in America. And American civilization could propagate to Asia through the Pacific Ocean within 50 years. Speed of transportation accelerated the speed of civilization propagation.
- Cross the Indian Ocean : a sailing boat
- Cross the Atlantic Ocean : earlier a sailing boat, later a steamship
- Cross the Pacific Ocean : Diesel engine ship, aircraft, automobile
▶ Because of the barriers in whole Asia (the iron curtain in USSR, the truce line in Korea and the bamboo curtain in China) in cold war period, the core of the civilization couldn't settle down in Asia at the beginning of the Pacific age. It was in Tokyo, Japan for a while. And it resided in Singapore through Seoul, Taiwan and Hong-Kong (the four dragons).
▶ Since perestroika of USSR and the open-door policy of China, the core of the civilization moved northward and formed South-China economic bloc around Hong-Kong, and moved again Shanghai and Beijing in more northward part. USSR was collapsed because they open the closed-door too widely and too quickly. China applied a gradual open-door policy and carefully slightly opened the southern part (farthest from the central administration).
▶ China drove extensive development plan on their inland area. No one knows yet whether it goes successfully or not. But it's very interesting that the case is very similar with the period of western settlement after American Independent.
▶ It is certain that the possibility that the Ring East Sea economic bloc which consists of the north eastern part of China, Mongolia, far eastern part of Russia, south and north Korea and Japan will be formed before the Chinese western inland area development is very high with a precondition of no more problems with north Korea.
