The letter of Chosun's Lee Yung Choson (Lyean San Kun) to President Ryukyu written in January 1500 is housed in Shimazuke in Miyazaki-Ken. The letter contains a story about sending back home Ryukyuan who was washed up on Jeiudo in Chosun (Korea). This document has been known as the oldest original copy existing in Japan among the diplomatic documents sent to Ryukyu of Japan from Chosun. The letter describes ten people who were washed up on the southern district in Chosun. Six of them died of a disease, while four survivors were sent back home through Tsushima people.
In this study, the truth and falsehood of this particular document was investigated for the first time even though it has been considered the authentic copy of the letter. The authenticity of the letter was doubtful in many ways including the quality of paper, distribution of characters, size of characters, uses of characters, content, and the date of writing. It is difficult to conclude that the document is a forged one on the basis of these characteristics alone. However, conclusive evidence that the letter was not produced in Chosun but in Tsushima comes from the finding that the character Tsu (?) in Tsushima was used instead of Tsu (對) when the correct form of a Chinese character had to be used in the diplomatic documents of the King.
