This paper aims to explore the methods delimiting a transition zone(TZ) and to figure out the characteristics of the spatial change of the TZ in a case city. Some procedures are taken in this study. Firstly, urban land use files which are measured in a floor areas by land use type, in block unit, and in interval period are formulated in a case of Jung-gu, in Daegu. Secondly, the alternative boundaries of TZs are delimited on the basis of the marginal percentage of floor space in transition land use, respectively in 1985, 1995 and 2003 and a proper delimitation criterion is chosen. Thirdly, the delimitation criterion is tested by exploring the characteristics of the spatial changes of TZ. The results are as follows;
Firstly, 40 percent of its floor space in transition zone use is suggested as the criterion for delimitation of the transition zones. Secondly, the transition zone was expanded before 1995, but stagnated after 1995. Thirdly, 3 types of TZ are derived from spatial changes of TZ in the process of expanding CBD. They are CBD shifted from TZ, the stagnated TZ and the TZ shfited from residential zone. It is statistically verified that each of three types of TZ is different on base of land use. Fourthly, the stagnated TZ is defined to be a problem area in the progress of urban decline.
