This study closely examines the effect of the variable, science & technology infrastructure, on regional development represented by innovation. Hypothesis applied in this study is that with the increase in the variable of science & technology infrastructure, innovation increases, and, accordingly, the regional development also increases. Variables of science & technology infrastructure, including budget, human resources and organizations for science & technology research & development, were set as independent variables, and number of regional patent applications and regional gross product, which are deemed to be the outcomes of regional innovation, were set as dependent variable in order to execute causality analysis.
The outcome of the study illustrated significant defined causality between the variable of science & technology infrastructure, and number of regional patent applications and regional gross product. It was possible to observe the effect of science & technology infrastructure on the number of regional patent applications and regional gross product through regression coefficient for each region. The degree of influence of science & technology infrastructure of 5 regions, excluding Jeju, for which regression model is significant displayed order of Capital Region > Youngnam > Kangwon > Honam > Choongchung. Similarly, comparison of degree of influence of science & technology infrastructure on regional gross product in 4 regions for which regression model is significant displayed order of Jeju > Youngnam > Capital Region > Kangwon. This study, on the basis of above outcome of analysis, found out that variable of science & technology infrastructure in 6 regions including Capital Region imparts influence on regional innovation variables, which has been presented by comparatively analyzing the regional differences of these. Furthermore, limitations of this study as well as progressive address on follow-up study were made.
