Keats ambitiously wrote his early poem Endymion as “A Poetic Romance” when romance has already declined into a marginal genre and very few poets claimed to write it. In his later poems, however, we witness his changed attitude toward it, i.e. replacing romantic elements with realistic ones or debunking them. As a result, poems such as Isabella; or, The Pot of Basil, The Eve of St. Agnes, Lamia, of which the main story explicitly deals with courtly or romantic love, end with the destruction or weakening of their romantic aspects. For Keats, romance was once a world where he could get a glimpse of the absolute beauty or truth. His desire for the spiritual unity with the immortal world through romance, however, gradually evolves into skepticism about its very possibility. In this process, Keats’s appropriation of the image of a veiled woman as a metaphor for the hidden truth also changes. If he was once firm in his earlier poems with his belief in the being of substance, essence, and truth behind the veil, in his later poems, he seems to realize that the so-called ‘substance’ or ‘truth’ cannot but be products of our individual intuition, perception, and understanding, filtered through our imaginative lenses that refract whatever ‘truth’ or ‘essence’ there would be. This paper examines how Keats’s view of truth undergoes changes throughout his short-time poetic career. Since his view of truth cannot be separated with romance, I examine his view toward romance as well from Endymion to The Fall of Hyperion.
