Gilles Deleuze considers the book as 'matter,' 'machine,' and 'multiplicity' to reverse the closed system of thought and to produce new 'thought of becoming' and new possible world. The purpose of this paper is to examine his view through reading Paul Auster's The New York Trilogy as 'matter', 'machine,' and 'multiplicity.'
Chapter Ⅱ explains The New York Trilogy as nonidentical multiplicity, denying it that has the identity to pursue the organic unity. The New York Trilogy is not an identical trilogy in which three novella are organically connected. Each novella escapes from the system of traditional detective story pursuing one fixed meaning or definite end; thus its characters lose their identity. This escape and nonidentity of characters give the novel the possibility of a book-machine which reads new 'thought of becoming' in the novel. Chapter Ⅲ also discusses the reverse of identity by the nonidentity of names and narrators, and the problem of the 'red notebook' and the author in the novel.
Therefore, this study which explains The New York Trilogy as nonidentical multiplicity confirms Deleuze's view that literary works have the power to produce 'thought of becoming' which extends and creates the life.
