This research investigates the acoustic and phonetic characteristics of English stops in 's + stop' sequences produced by Korean speakers and compares them with the pronunciations of English native speakers. This paper also examines the relationships among English word initial voiceless(aspirated) stops, word initial voiced stops and stops in 's + stop' sequences (unaspirated) and tries to ascertain the possibility of L1 transference. The results show that Korean learners tend to pronounce English stops in 's + stop' sequences as aspirated sounds and the temporal structures of 's + stop' sequences of Korean learners are different from those of native speakers in every aspect including frication, VOT, closure duration, and the proportion between frication and stop duration. As for the relationships among English stops, the differences among 3 categories of phones are statistically significant and an interaction between sounds and groups of speakers (Korean learners and English native speakers) has been found. Though the statistic analyses show that stops in 's + stop' sequences and Korean tense stops form a subset, the results may not be interpreted as L1 transference considering the VOT gap between Korean and native speakers.
