The study was performed to investigate the possibility of seed potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv Superior) production using plug seedlings which were derived from aeroponically produced minitubers (0.7 g weight). The minitubers were planted on 128-cell plug trays and their plug seedlings were transplanted into field under rain-sheltered screenhouse conditions.
Transplanting of plug seedlings were compared with the direct planting of mini tubers and conventional cut seed tubers (30-40g). Plug seedlings grown in commercial substrates showed better growth in shoot and root compared to the peatmoss- and cocopeat-based substrates because of the optimum range of pH (4.8-5.8) and high levels of EC (0.2-0.8 dSm?¹). In field experiment, dry weight accumulation of shoot reached maximum 70 days after planting (DAP) for cut seed tubers while those of plug seedlings and minitubers increased until 80 to 90 DAP. Tuber dry weight increased to 45-50 g per plant for cut seed tubers, 40-45 g for plug seedlings, and 35-40 g for minitubers on harvest 90 and 100 DAP. Specific gravity of tubers harvested showed no significant differences among the seed sources although there was a slight decrease in cut seed tubers. Total number of seed tubers after transplanting into field was not different between minitubers and plug seedlings. Total yield of seed tubers was higher in cut seed tubers (2.0-2.7 ㎏ per 10 plants) than those in plugs eedlings(1.6-2.2 kg) and minitubers(1.3-2.0 ㎏).
