The Byeonsan peninsula is part of the Jeonbuk Province Buan-gun area. A particular place which seems to have been a site for memorial services, suggests that people at the time have been performing certain services ever since the 4th century, hoping that the entities responsible for the safety of the sea would look after them. The people of the Baekjae dynasty already knew that the Byeonsan peninsula was an important area for sea traffic. There are also tales depicting the Gwaneum's arrival and various types of pictures depicting the Gwaneum figure, found, collected or confirmed through the area.
The mystic religions involving the Gwaneum figure are mostly found in the Seonun-san mountain and other areas. The tales and pictures collected in this area suggest that the area was immensely prospering at the time as one of the most strategically important traffic points. And from the site which seems to have been meant for memorial services, the artifacts from the Chinese and Japanese people were also found, suggesting that the area was indeed a focal point, crowded with both domestic and foreign entities who exchanged cultural qualities in the process.
In China, the Botarakga Island of the Jujang(浙江) area was one of the most famous places to deliver a prayer for the safety of ships passing by. According to the record of Seo Geung, who was a Chinese emissary to Koryo, it seems that there was a seaway established between this island and the Byeonsan peninsula of Koryo. The Gwaneum worship which was introduced to the Koryo dynasty seem to have originally been from the Botarakga- Island. After the unification of the Shilla dynasty, ships carrying mercenaries and emissaries seem to have usually delivered a prayer or memorial services at this place hoping the Gwaneum figures to oversee their safety. These kinds of worships are still being strongly demonstrated by the big part of the public, today.
