During the past decade and continuing today, NGOs and other civil societies throughout the world have played a significant role in conflict resolution and peace building. While the majority of the activities of many NGOs has centered on humanitarian assistance, this approach is changing with the necessity to look beyond immediate relief and strategize for the long term survival of victims of conflict situations.
This paper examines the role African women play in conflict resolution from the grass roots level to the international arena. It also explores how African women’s NGOs have gravitated together to rebuild their communities while working to reconcile groups and individuals through reconciliation, forgiveness, conflict resolution, and global peace through unity. It is observed that during conflict and immediately following it, women’s role in conflict resolution is necessary as women find themselves assuming prominent roles in the domestic areas, community, and public life. Women’s groups have been active in fostering dialogue in societies that traditionally do not recognize equal rights for women as compared to men. Wars and conflicts have empowered women to join in the search for solutions to a peaceful living not by governmental policy design but by sheer necessity. While women are disproportionately represented in many conflict resolution efforts, women’s groups nevertheless resort to unconventional methods to bring about peace and justice without the use of weapons where their male leaders have failed.
