Most women in Thailand are fortunate that they live in peaceful environment, unlike their sisters in some war-torn countries. Nonetheless, a proportion of Thai women do face atrocities committed by men just because they are women. The ststistics on rape, rape and murder, and murder cases, where family heads kill their family and then themselves, indicate that during the past five or six years, violence done to women is tied not only to their sex and gender, but also to the class system, public opinion and the economic crisis that hit Thailand in July 1997. Thus in the case of Thailand, economic and social factors have to be improved along with universal education about the Convention on Human Rights and the Convention on the Violence against Women.
