The seamless and ubiquitous communicative networks in the information age are undoubtedly reshaping the way and mode of social engagements in our hyper-modem society, this paper examines the interfacing between human agencies and information and communication technologies (ICT) with the focus on the digital-portable gadgets embodied into mobile phone.
In the informatization-driven modernity with a burgeoning penetration of wireless ICT (3G, ultra-wideband WiMax) networking, it is more than obvious that, for the users, mobile communicative gadgets define the extent of one's sociality and his/her image(s) in real and virtual social life. At the micro (person-to-person) level, the communicative cyber-scapes created by communicating agencies serve not just to articulate their personal space (in extending their communicative freedom for fantasy and imagination), but also enabling their (re-)presentation of the self and (re-)defining their social relationships to others.
Focusing on the ever-upgrading of ICT and the ever-expansion of the value-added contents in mobile communication, this paper has four parts. After a brief on the ICT-driven socio-economic change for hyper-modernization, Part 2 examines the reshaping of social interactions and relationships under a new regime of mobile communication. Part 3 discusses the specific role of the mobile, digital-portable, communicative gadgets in social innovation and cultural reproduction. The paper ends with critical remarks on the mobile engagement in everyday life.
