This paper tries to interpret 「Yoji(The Earth)」(Park, Kyungri) by reference with metaphor of illness, and to analyse how the power of modernity had been accepted into the everyday lives of that time. It seeks to overcome the violence of modernity, too.
The concept of ‘metaphor of illness’ can provide a good tool to analyse micro-powers that penetrate through all the space-time of the novel and to analyse how the people of that time had counter-moved to chose powers. Various symbols and metaphors of epidemics as well as any other diseases were mobilized to condemn their everyday lives as insanitary, savage and underdeveloped. They were used to introduce modernized administration systems of hospital and public health, which had began to occupy and dominate everyday lives of that time. They provided useful tools to dichotomously divide premodern / modern, savage / sanity, traditional medicine / scientific medicine, and community / individual. Such division allows sanity power operate as mechanism for surveillance and punishment, all of which caused establishment of sanitary science and sanitary police power as well as transition from traditional to western medicine.
The characters of the novel, however, strongly resisted such sanitary powers imposed from above. They concealed themselves from linear modernization process. They watched illusion of enlightenment in western medicine and criticized violence of that medical system. The characters covertly and overtly refused to accept metaphors of diseases, and actively showed their own responses to those disease with different conceptions and meanings.
This parer classified patterns of deviation from labeling process of the metaphor and explained them in ways : investigation of non-modern conception of illness and diseases, inversion of meanings of diseases and health, and inter-adaptation of body and diseases. From such findings, this paper can diagnose problems of dichotomous division of health and disease, and depict accurate points of resistance against medical powers based on such division. It can pose some possibilities for overcome the violent disciplines of modernity, which has been made from contradicting illness and diseases against health. Ability for the characters to change and convert the metaphor of illness can be translated into new potentiality of resistance founded on the body and everyday lives.
