In the history of Korean Poetry, Jo Ji-Hun is the poet who has shown a variety of humanistic aspects for all his life of 48 years. This essay has searched for ‘mourning heart’, in other words ‘ea-sang(애상,哀傷)’, which is one of his aesthetic characteristics and has not been treated properly so far. This ‘mourning heart’ can be said to be related to lyric poetry from the viewpoint of evolution theory, and will be proved in this essay to have an important meaning over the poet’s whole lives of writing poetry.
Firstly, this essay has briefly examined the origin of the word ‘ea-sang’, and then presents a list of vocabularies relating to ‘crying’ to show how this word exists and explores the aspects of poems which have the relevant words in them through a simple statistical research. Thus, it finally finds out that these relevant vocabularies are seen more than once from more than half of his poems and also these vocabularies are seen more than once, on the average, from one poem with them inside. In addition, it is found out that his poems has continued to prefer such words.
Secondly, this essay has pointed out the detailed aspects and changing process of various forms of ‘crying’ words by analyzing his representative poems with them in the chronological order. Examining his works like ‘Bong-whang-su(鳳凰愁)’, ‘Nak-hwa(falling leaves)’ and ‘Seung-mu(a priest dance)’ in the collection of Cheong-nok Jip(靑鹿集), it has been found out that the poet placed the colour of strong emotional ‘crying’ usually in the latter part, at the climax of his poems and he relied the aesthetic climax of the works on ‘crying’. Afterwards, analyzing his works of ‘Afternoon in the zoo’, ‘You, please put the crown of thorns on’, and ‘Facing the history’, we have noticed that the poet revealed a kind of pride or confidence seen in his poems with social action but his uncomfortableness or unsatisfied mind for this though. Also, it has been found out that the poet has an idea which ‘tears’ can be helping to give the peaceful mind and the breadth of mind and ‘sorrow’ can be beauty by examining his poem ‘The sunshine of mind’ which is the ending work of ‘crying’ poems. We should add that this idea is an important change of aesthetic sense.
This essay proves that aesthetics of ‘mourning’ significantly scatters around his works which has been honoured as completeness and literary accomplishment and it further explores them along the line of ‘mourning’. It can be said that through this, there is a lyric poet with delicateness and sensitiveness placed inside the poet Jo Ji-Hun’s humane features. He and his world of poetry would be valued when we examine thoroughly such aspects of the poet who is known as a patriot, a scholar, and a polemic writer.
