Pepper anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum spp., is one of the most damaging pepper diseases in Asian countries. The disease has recently become so serious that screening of Capsicum germplasm for anthracnose resistance has been required. In spite of constant efforts, few or non-reliable genetic resources resistant to the disease have been found to date because of pathogenic variability within isolates of Colletotrichum species. In this study, 41 pepper genotypes belonging to C. annuum, C. chinense, C. frutescens, and C. baccatum germplasms were inoculated with 11 pepper isolates of Colletotrichum. Significant differences were observed among the 41 pepper genotypes in disease reactions to 11 pathogen isolates. Three C. baccatum genotypes were identified to be the broad-spectrum genetic resources resistant to all 11 pathogen isolates. In addition, several pepper genotypes and pathogen isolates could be classified in one group based on the host?pathogen interactions. These interactions suggest the possibility of developing a set of differential hosts corresponding to the specific groups of pathogen isolates. Our results will be very helpful to better understand pepper-anthracnose pathosystem and to establish breeding program for anthracnose resistance.
