This research explores attitudes towards marriage among men and women in Korea. Data for this research come from 1998 General Social Survey by Korea National Statistical Office. More than 60,000 respondents revealed their values and attitudes toward marriage as a social system. Using ordinal logit analysis, I explore how and why the attitudes towards marriage are changing in contemporary Korea.
Hypotheses in this research are as follows:
H1: The more people are affirmative in women's getting job, the negative the attitudes towards marriage are.
H2: Those who experience economic hardships are more likely to be negative towards marriage than those who do not.
H3: Those who are satisfied with family life are more likely to be positive towards marriage than those who are not.
H4: Those who believe that there is sex discrimination in Korean society are more likely to be negative towards marriage than those who do not.
All hypotheses are verified in this research. This result shows that attitudes towards marriage can be variable in Korean society. In particular, economic hardship right after economic crisis which began in the late 1997 greatly influenced attitudes towards marriage among Korean men and women.
